Thaxted Park Golf Club - A short history

Thaxted Park Golf Club, situated at Woodcroft, South Australia, was officially opened in 1964. The course layout takes advantage of the rolling hills, offering views to the sea and many of the tree-lined fairways are interwoven with the creeks and dams which attract an abundance of wildlife.

Thaxted Park Golf Club is now 'Adelaide's best kept golfing secret'. A true golfer's golf course that has a lay out comprising predominantly Santa Anna irrigated fairways and greens that are the envy of most Clubs. The following is typical of feedback received at the Club.

'Thank you for a great day last Sunday, the course is a real challenge and the facilities excellent. Each hole seemed to have a new story and it kept up your interest as you took on the wow factor that greats you as you move around the course. Thank you once again and I will certainly be back.'

The Club is the most successful Club away from the sand-belt, having won the Simpson Cup on four occasions and has proven to be a successful breeding ground for Professional Golfers, including Glen Joyner, Adrian Percey, Justin Cooper, Nathan Kent and more recently Adam Bland, a former Junior Champion.

In 2007, Thaxted Park Golf Club once again competed for the Simpson Cup, having won the A2 Championship in 2006.

Throughout the years, Thaxted Park Golf Club has maintained and enhanced its enviable reputation as a friendly, affordable and sociable place where members can relax in company overlooking a course that is a credit to the dedicated Staff, Committees and Members alike. Thaxted Park Golf Club's continued growth in membership can be attributed to the quality of the Course and the affordable price of its membership.

2007 saw the introduction of an innovative program of Junior Development through the local schools designed to enable all children irrespective of their socio-economic background the opportunity to experience the recreational benefits of playing golf.

Do yourself a favour, see what everyone else is talking about, Thaxted Park Golf Club, really is "Adelaide's best kept golfing secret."

Memberships are currently available in all Categories, with No Joining Fee or Waiting Period at present.

From the Prez!

As most of you know by now Andy Blacker our previous superintendent has moved on after 20 years at Thaxted Park, but you may have noticed a new face on the greens staff his name is Mike Bosley. Mike hails from the U.K. and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience. He has settled in very quickly and now is a very valued member of our team. I ask all members to please make him feel welcome.

Gold Pass Golf - Mt Lofty, Mt Barker & Gawler (Sandy Creek) Golf Clubs are all part of our initiative to provide better deals for our members, our full members can play 5 times per year at these courses just by getting a card from our Manager Adam Hays or our Pro Jay Fuss and booking at the club of choice.

Unfortunately we could not secure some of the southern courses as they rely on green fees more than membership; however we have secured full reciprocal rights with Blue Lakes Golf Club at Mt Gambier.

Snakes & Rakes - the black snakes made from old irrigation hose are an attempt to keep the bloody cockies away from the greens and surrounds, so please leave them as they are unless your ball is close.

If anything gets up my nose it is bunker rakes not being replaced correctly ! Our bunkers are not the best due to drainage, wind and in some cases design; however, rakes must be placed back in the bunker. This means on the flat area and in the direction of play after raking; bunker edges are to be smooth not raked up the sides where you walk in, consider the players behind you - read the labels on most of our rakes!

The kiwi & the Galah and a bit of help from a Pom.
The Queens Birthday holiday (07) our very alert Sharon heard the cry of help from one of our feathered friends who managed to get itself stuck in the kitchen exhaust fan. The Galah was sitting on the fan blades above the deep fryer - lucky both were not turned on.

To the rescue Peter &Troy Sherratt who climbed onto the clubhouse roof and dismantled the large exhaust flue that required the muscle power of Peter Berry to lift from its housing.

The Galah took off unharmed and soon attracted its mate and several friends who hung around long enough to see the boys reassemble the flue.

Thanks guys for giving up part of your day.

New Members

Welcome to our New Members. Please make yourselves known as we all look forward to meeting you and we are sure you will enjoy yourselves here at Thaxted Park.

There will be a New Members Day, (T.B.A in June, watch this space), where we hope you and your families will come along. It will be a great opportunity to meet other members, we will play golf and afterwards, a barbeque meal will be provided free of charge.

A Reminder for Members

Care for the Course

Please ensure you always address the following:
  • Always carry and use a Sand Bucket. Repair the divots of others too.
  • Repair Plug Marks on Greens. While others are putting, look for plug marks and fix them.
  • Drive Golf Carts in the rough as much as possible, keeping away from greens, green surrounds and tees.
  • If you are practice swinging, avoid taking a divot.
  • Do not damage greens with your sprigs or the Flagstick.
  • Fences on 5th, 14th & 18th! Under no circumstance are these fences around the boundary to be lifted or climbed!!!!!!

Slow Play

The position on the Course is to KEEP UP with the group in front not keep in front of the group behind.

There are a number of KEEP UP strategies. Ask the pro-shop if you're not sure.

If your Group is taking more than 4 hours, you and your group need to improve your pace of play by practicing KEEP UP tactics, so that you can be part of the solution not part of the problem.

Remember your place in the field is behind the group in front NOT in front of the group behind! If your group does fall a hole behind,

"ALWAYS LET THE GROUP BEHIND THROUGH!"

Please Share the Course.

Good Golfing

Introducing - Adam Hays - Club Manager

I thought I would take the opportunity to introduce myself and give a brief rundown on my background

Born in England, in the early eighties my parents migrated to New Zealand to take up the steward's position at Hamilton Golf Club in the central North Island. Growing up on a golf course, I quickly fell in love with the sport and as most young golfers do, had aspirations of becoming a professional golfer. I represented New Zealand in the 1991 Secondary Schools World Championships at St. Andrews (which was a highlight). Upon returning, I started as an apprentice with my club Professional Brian Boys and the NZPGA.

After two years of frustration, due to limited playing opportunities, I reverted back to amateur status.

I joined the team at Hamilton's first full size Driving Range and ran the retail side of the business before a member of my golf club approached me about a pub he was building in the city centre.

From then on it was all hospitality and very little golf. Having spent two years at the Four Oaks Tavern I went to London and joined Bass Charrington running various Pubs and Venues in the London CBD for 8 years.

Meeting my South Australian wife Jacqui in London, we moved to Adelaide to start a new life together. We have two children Corban and Neve.

I am very excited about joining the team at Thaxted Park. The people I've met so far have been friendly and helpful as I familiarise myself with the club. The passion and pride for the club has been noticeable in my first months here and I look forward to working with you all towards making Thaxted Park a prosperous club. (Come on the All Blacks).

Regards
Adam Hays.

"Club Functions & Special Events"

Our Clubrooms are available for hire for functions, and arrangements can be made to suit every occasion. The rooms are set with stunning views of the golf course. See the functions page for more details, or contact the club directly.

"Around the Grounds"

Well, we are into the second year of one of the worst droughts on record making it all the more challenging to maintain our golf course. Rainfall for the past 6 months has been slightly below average with just 12mm in January this year, although, with the east coast getting more than its fair share of rain and the La Nina weather pattern in full swing, the bureau of meteorology is predicting we have a 50/50 chance of exceeding the median rainfall during Feb-April, fingers crossed!!.

Our current water situation is not too bad with about half the 17th dam (10 mega lts) remaining. This should last to about early march given the current temperatures. Therefore, our reliance of mains water should be about the usual amount.

The 9th fairway is back in play due to the conversion to Santa Anna couch that is now starting to grow. Until there is coverage the newly sprigged areas will remain out of play with a compulsory G.U.R to be enforced. Designated drop zones will be in place allowing you to play it at full distance. I hope to have the hole opened sometime in March depending on coverage. With the change and shortage of staff over the summer months there were plans to do more Santa Anna conversion but we have been unable to dedicate the time to these projects. Unfortunately this will be continued in the next growing season, the same goes for our other improvement plans, which include continuing pathway upgrading, kikuyu eradication, re-turfing with couch of the ladies 13th tee and bunker upgrading. Now with the slower winter months approaching this should allow us to play catch up and we can get back on track. I thank you for your patience.

Also, I would like to take this opportunity to ask members to avoid driving their golf carts onto the tees and green surrounds as this puts added stress on the turf, which is already struggling at this time of year, and please avoid any muddy areas during the wetter periods.

Happy hitting everyone have fun out there and here's to a wet and cold winter.

From the Ladies' "Prez"

2007 was a very challenging but successful year.

I would like to thank all the Ladies for their efforts, particularly in the area of fundraising, which included money to help purchase the new heater for the Lounge area. Volunteers who sold raffle tickets, made and sold cakes and sold lucky squares achieved this.

I am extremely grateful to the Ladies who made generous donations of money and to those who replaced the table arrangements and updated the plants in the foyer, which was a much-needed upgrade to the entrance to our Clubhouse.

Congratulations to the Ladies who won the following events:

Club Champion Lyn Pascoe
B Grade Champion Sandra Jenneys
C Grade Champion Kaye Sage
A Grade Foursomes Liz Fellows & Pat Hogg
B Grade Foursomes Lyn Kiddey &Jeanne Ditchburn
C Grade Foursomes Kelly Fuss & Eve Schahinger
Shylie Rymill Foursomes Lee Byrnes & Andrea Jarred

I would also like to thank Adam, the bar and kitchen staff and office volunteers for a job well done. Also, the Ground Staff and the course volunteers for continuing to present us with a great golf course.

To the Ladies committee, a special thank you for the amount of work and support you have given me in helping 2007 be a very successful year and here's to a fantastic year of golf in 2008.

Lastly, good luck to all the Ladies representing the Club in the Cleek and Pennant sides during the months ahead.

PACE OF PLAY

PLAY AT A GOOD PACE AND KEEP UP

PLAYERS SHOULD PLAY AT A GOOD PACE. THE COMMITTEE MAY ESTABLISH PACE OF PLAY GUIDELINES THAT ALL PLAYERS SHOULD FOLLOW.

IT IS THE GROUPS RESPONSIBILITY TO KEEP UP WITH THE GROUP IN FRONT. IF IT LOSES A CLEAR HOLE AND IT'S DELAYING THE GROUP BEHIND, IT SHOULD INVITE THE GROUP BEHIND THO PLAY THROUGH, IRRESPECTIVE OF THE NUMBER OF PLAYERS IN THAT GROUP.

WHERE A GROUP HAS NOT LOST A CLEAR HOLE, BUT IT IS APPARENT THAT THE GROUP BEHIND CAN PLAY FASTER, IT SHOULD INVITE THE FASTER MOVING GROUP TO PLAY THROUGH.

Bereavement Notices

Since the last edition we have lost four of our members.

Fred Barrows - Who always played with the early morning group on a
Saturday. Fred was good guy with a terrifically dry sense of humor.

Sam Muggeridge - Who was for many months the operator of the kitchen and
was a good friend to all.

James (Jimmy) Roberts - The friendly Scottish character who always had a smile and friendly word to everyone.

Ken Cocks - A member who had been associated with the club for a number of years.

"All will be sorely missed!"

RETIREMENT OF JEFF STRUGNEL

I would like to take this opportunity to inform the members that after many years at the club Jeff has, sadly, retired from the Club. For those who don't know, Jeff was the inaugural Club Champion, and will be missed by many. Thank-You Jeff, from us all, for your efforts over the years in making Thaxted Park what it is today.

"Bowheys Mob"

"Bowheys Mob", (aka Graham Bowhey/Shotgun and the groups designated coordinator Gary Jackson!), is a group of members who regularly play golf on Sunday's. We meet around 11 - 11: 30am usually for a 12:00pm tee off (check with the Pro-Shop). It's a great opportunity to meet other members and play a friendly round with different groups each week. There is a $2 pool that each player can contribute to, just to add that little bit of friendly rivalry. Then at the 19th all usually has a bevy or two and the group also has a regular Barbie.

All are welcome!

In Profile

An interview with Chris Bailey

"The Traineeship"

As you all should know a young club member by the name of Chris Bailey recently started a PGA traineeship with Club Professional Jay Fuss. It was an idea struck up between us that I would interview him to give the members a better idea of his traineeship. I hope you enjoy it.

What made you interested in taking up a PGA traineeship?

From the first time I started golf I loved it. I played my first round at the par three course at the Patawalonga and I've been hooked ever since. I had a lesson with Jay when he first came to Thaxted and he told me I have the talent and swing to make a career out of golf. He was kind enough to give me a part time job in the pro shop that allowed me to practice hard and get my handicap down. I have never really wanted to work in an office or continue my study past year 12 so when Jay offered me the traineeship I jumped at the chance.

How many years does the traineeship take?

A PGA traineeship takes 3 years to complete. There are two parts to a traineeship your playing and theory side.

What handicap did you have to be on to take up your traineeship, and what is it currently at?

Your handicap must be at least 3 or under to start a traineeship and at the moment it is currently 3. I have made a few swing changes recently and hopefully with some hard work my golf game will go to the next level.

What level of practice would you have to put in to maintain your level of golf?

Practice is such an important part of golf but you must make sure you practice correctly. The old saying that practice makes perfect is not quite true. In my room I have a sign that reads "perfect practice makes perfect". It is no good just bashing balls on the driving range so I spend up to half my practice time working on my routines, which also help me in pressure situations. In all I probably practice around 20 hours a week. I spend 5 hours on my putting, 10 hours on shots inside 100m including bunker play, chipping, pitching and half wedge shots. The most important practice for every golfer is on or around the putting green. This becomes even more important in professional golf due to the fact that most of the guys out there all hit it well so to get an advantage a great short game is necessary.

How many tournament rounds do you have to play over the three years to complete your traineeship?

Each year of your traineeship you must play in 38 tournament rounds. All of these rounds count towards your average, which you must pass to complete your traineeship.

What sort of responsibilities do you have to maintain and improve the presentation of the pro shop?

With all retail outlets presentation is crucial. I have the role of organizing the layout of the shop and maintaining the cleanliness. I'm am also involved with the representatives of most major golf companies and must make sure we have all items in stock and look out for new items coming out onto the market to be sure our pro-shop is stocked with the latest golf gear whilst offering a wide selection to cater for all our members.

What sort of communication skills do you feel you have achieved whilst you have been working in the pro shop?

I am certainly more confident and relaxed when talking to customers now and I have the ability to have a joke around with some members while still maintaining a professional manner. I have certainly built a strong relationship with the members and I feel they are able to come to me with a wide range problems or queries.

At what point in your traineeship can you start teaching the club members?

You are able to start teaching in your second year. In the first year you can teach but you must have the club professional supervising.

What plans do you have once your traineeship is completed?

This is something I have been thinking about for sometime and still don't have a definite answer. It all depends on where I am with my golf game when I finish. Hopefully it is at a level that I would be able to go out on tour obviously starting in Australia and make a living. If this is not the case I will look for a job as an assistant pro at one of the bigger clubs around Australia allowing me to work on my golf game. In the end all I want to do is play golf.

We thank you for your time Chris. As you all know Chris is currently on the way back from a major leg break and we wish him all the best as he strives to reach his goals.

Garry Rowe

From the Dictionary: "Golf" -: The derivation of the word 'golf 'from its Celtic and Middle English roots is obscure. Some possibilities are: gil f f (an incurable madness), gylf (a notorious liar), gullf (to beat a shrub with a short stick), golve (under; beneath; lost; blocked; submerged; stuck; obstructed), gellvo (horribly; terribly; hopelessly; awfully), galfa (my God!; oh, no!), goal fyl (to cry; to weep) and gael f (I quit). Bequests

What is a bequest?

A bequest is a gift made in your will. You can make bequests to individuals, companies, associations or charities. A bequest to the Thaxted Park Golf Club is an investment for life. Making a bequest may be as simple as adding a Codicil to your existing will, but seek the advice of your solicitor.

General Information

Bequests to Thaxted Park Golf Club may be made in the form of cash, securities, real estate or other property. You should specify that Thaxted Park Golf Club is to receive a certain amount or percentage of your estate, particular assets, or the remainder of your estate after providing for heirs. If you or your solicitors would like to discuss making a bequest to Thaxted Park Golf Club, please contact us.

In any case, if you elect to include Thaxted Park Golf Club in a provision of your will, it would be very helpful to Thaxted Park Golf Club if you could let us know. It would also allow us to express our gratitude for any bequest you may make.

Types of Bequests

Following are some examples of various types of bequests:

Specific bequests are used to make a gift of a specific dollar amount or specific assets, such as securities, real estate or personal property.

Residuary bequests are used to give all or a portion of the rest, residue and remainder of your estate after payment of expenses and any specific amounts designated to other beneficiaries.

Contingent bequests will result in a gift to Thaxted Park Golf Club only in the event of the death of other beneficiaries or the fulfillment of certain conditions described in your estate plans.

ALL BEQUESTS WOULD BE GRATEFULLY ACCEPTED AND ACKNOWLEDGED

CAPITAL WORKS IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM

As reported at the 2007 AGM, the Committee is considering the implementation of a 5 Year Capital Works Improvement Program.

Projects to be considered, include, the construction of a new green at the 8th, a new practice area with associated revised layouts for the 5th and 6th Holes and improvements to the western side of the Clubhouse and car park area.

It is proposed that the projects would be funded by an Annual Levy of approximately $50-00 per year, payable by all 5/6 &7 day Members, including Special Life Members. 9 Hole and Junior Members would pay half.

The implementation of the proposed program will be subject to Member Feedback and ultimately put to a vote by Members at a Special General Meeting. A two-thirds majority would be required to approve of the Program and associated funding.

The Committee therefore requests written feedback by letter or email to manager@thaxtedparkgolfclub.com.au on this Proposal. Submissions will be accepted submitted to the Club Manager by the 30th April 2008.

A summary of the feedback will be made available to all Members by the end of May 2008.
